Chris Taylor struck again, and again, and again on Thursday night to keep the Los Angeles Dodgers’ season alive.
Taylor, a former star at Cox High in Virginia Beach, blasted three home runs and finished 4 for 5 with six RBIs in the Dodgers’ 11-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series.
The Braves lead the series 3-2.
“It’s cool. It’s definitely a surreal feeling for me,” Taylor said. “I never thought I was going to hit three homers in a game, let alone a postseason game, and it just still hasn’t really sunk in.”
Taylor, who started at third base, had a pair of two-run homers and an RBI double by the fifth inning, then hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. He batted in the eighth, but with the Los Angeles crowd chanting “C-T-3″ — Taylor wears jersey No. 3 — he struck out swinging.
“I was trying not to think about it,” Taylor said. “Usually I’m just trying to hit line drives.”
Taylor became the first player in major league history to hit three home runs in an elimination game, and he’s just the second Dodgers player with three home runs in a postseason game (following Kiké Hernández in 2017).
Taylor set a Dodgers postseason record with 13 total bases, most by any major leaguer in an elimination game.
“We needed to make a statement,” Taylor said. “They put it on us yesterday. We had to respond.”
Taylor, who played for the University of Virginia, had been battling through a slump late in the regular season, but he has been on a tear in the playoffs. He hit a walk-off home run to win the National League wild-card game and on Thursday improved his batting average to .529 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in the NLCS.
Taylor’s at-bats on Thursday:
- Second inning: two-run HR to left off Max Fried.
- Third inning: RBI single to center off Fried.
- Fifth inning: two-run HR to center vs. Chris Martin.
- Seventh inning: solo HR to left vs. Dylan Lee.
- Eighth inning: strikeout vs. Jacob Webb.
Game 6 is Saturday at 5:08 p.m. in Atlanta.
