Most people know actor Jennifer Garner for her relationship with fellow Academy Award winner Ben Affleck. Though their high-profile marriage was one of the most talked-about celebrity romances of the mid-2000s, the Gone Girl star wasn’t the first Hollywood actor Garner was in love with. Before her romance with Affleck, Garner was married to actor Scott Foley.
In a recent interview, Foley opened up about his marriage to Garner, sharing how they met, how long they were together, and where they stand with each other today./aside">>
Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley’s marriage was short-lived
Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley’s love story began in 1998 on the set of the late ’90s hit show Felicity. Garner played the girlfriend of Foley’s character Noel.
During her two-episode stint, Garner became well acquainted and Foley and the two soon began dating in real life.
In October 2000, the pair tied the knot inside their home. The actors were married for a little more than two years before they decided to call it quits. They separated in March 2003 before finalizing their divorce in March 2004.
Garner wishes she didn’t marry Foley when she did
Though Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley split in March 2003, they didn’t announce their breakup until a month later.
A week before their separation made headlines, the 13 Going On 30 star sparked breakup rumors when she attended that year’s Oscars without her husband. Though she was all smiles on the red carpet, court documents obtained by InStyle indicated that Garner and Foley had officially split that same day.
After parting ways, Garner opened up about her and Foley’s breakup, sharing that the fast-paced culture in Hollywood played a part in their divorce.

“Everything is speeded up here — it is a fast-lane life, and if something is not working, it is considered best to end it without much thought,” she said, per InStyle. “If we lived where I was brought up [West Virginia], we would probably still be together.”
Years later, Garner went into greater detail about her divorce from the Scandal actor, admitting to The Sun that she regretted getting married in her 20s.
“Everyone reaches maturity at different times,” she said, per Page Six. “I wish I’d known to wait for marriage until I was 30 or over. I did marry in my twenties and I found divorce a crushing experience. I thought the divorce statistics would never apply to me. I was beyond heartbroken when they did.”
Scott Foley just revealed where things currently stand between him and Jennifer Garner
After pulling the plug on their relationship, both Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley eventually moved on with other people.
Following their split, Garner began dating her Alias co-star Michael Vartan. After that brief romance ended, she got into a relationship with Ben Affleck, whom she was married to for 10 years before they filed for divorce in 2015.
Meanwhile, Foley married actor Marika Domińczyk in 2007, and the two are still happily married today.
Despite Garner and Foley’s relationship not standing the test of time, neither celebrity has talked badly about the other in the years since their split.
In 2013, Garner called Foley a “great guy” while speaking with Allure magazine.
“We were full-on grown-ups, but looking back, I’m aware we did not know what hit us,” she said. “We didn’t have a shot. He’s a really good guy, and we just imploded.”
Recently, Foley opened up about where he stands with Garner, sharing that though they haven’t spoken in years, he would still be cordial with her if they happened to run into each other in public.

“No, you have to say hello. You’re very civil. I mean, we do not keep in contact because she has her own family. I have mine,” Foley explained while appearing on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “It wouldn’t be something that we would search out, but I’ve seen her a few times, especially when we were living in LA and Marika has been with me and, you know, everybody says, ‘Hi,’ and you’re cordial and you move on. That’s life right?”
